Virtual pets and a whole world

Neopets: wide rather than deep

Less a care simulator than a whole world to wander. Good for explorers and returning fans; light on breeding.

Neopets has been running since 1999, according to its official about page, which calls the browser game at neopets.com “the classic that started it all”. It is less a care simulator than a whole world: your pets are your passport to Neopia, a map of lands, characters, shops and stories. Of the six games here, it is the widest, and the least focused on breeding.

What it is

The official description reads like a list of invitations: adopt Neopets, customise them, stock your own shop, play mini-games, collect rare items and explore lands full of characters and landmarks, all from your browser. The Explore Neopia section introduces a long roster of species, each with its own lore: Draiks from Meridell, Grundos who now live on Kreludor, Bruces from the snowy hills near Terror Mountain. The Neopian Times, a community newspaper, and the fan-art and ambassador programmes show how much of Neopets lives in its community.

The Neopets name now also covers separate games, such as Faerie Fragments, a match-3 puzzle game for phones, and Tales of Dacardia. This review is about the original browser game only.

How a session goes

Neopets is wide rather than deep. Instead of a single care loop, the official pitch points in several directions at once: dress up your pets, run your shop, play the mini-games, chase collectibles or simply wander. That makes a typical session hard to describe and easy to shape around your own taste. Some players come for the pets, some for the economy of shops and items, some for the stories and characters.

The stable games ask whether you will come back tomorrow. Neopets asks which corner you will explore today.

Hayloft Riders, editorial note

The time it asks for

Nothing on the public pages describes a daily care schedule, so the time is mostly yours to set. The risk here is the opposite of the stable games: not neglect but sprawl. There is always another corner of Neopia to see, so a timer, or a rule such as one area per visit, helps keep it in proportion.

The money side

The terms of use say Neopets may offer the ability to purchase virtual items and subscription-based services, each with its own rules of participation. They are just as clear that playing Neopets is not a way to make money: you don't own the items, currency or pets in your account, and you may not sell them for real money. Accounts now run through NeoPass, a single sign-in for the Neopets games that supports two-factor authentication.

The age line

When you register through NeoPass, you're asked for your date of birth; if you're a minor, a parent or guardian is asked to verify the account and give permission. The terms also ask players under 18, or anyone counted as a child where they live, to go through the rules with their parents, and they set family-friendly rules for everything posted on the site.

Who it suits

A good fit if…

  • You played years ago and want to see what has changed.
  • You like variety more than a single routine.
  • Collecting items and running a shop sound like fun.
  • A younger player wants to join with a parent involved.

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want deep breeding and genetics.
  • You prefer a focused game with a clear daily loop.
  • Sprawling sites with many menus wear you out.

Strengths and snags

Strengths

  • A huge world with long-running lore.

  • NeoPass sign-in with two-factor authentication.
  • Plenty of variety for different moods.

Snags

  • The breadth can feel scattered at first.
  • Paid items and subscriptions are part of the offer.
  • Far less breeding depth than the other five.
