Dragon breeding and collecting

Flight Rising: a dragon clan that waits for you

Breeding comes first, and missed days are forgiven. A fantasy collector's game with monthly festivals and a gem shop on the side.

Flight Rising describes itself as “a social web-based activity site featuring dragon breeding, adventuring, combat, and collecting”. That is accurate, and the order matters: breeding comes first. You run a clan of dragons tied to one of eleven elements, and nearly everything you do loops back to the nest. The game is run by Stormlight Workshop and is played entirely on its website.

What it is

You start with two dragons: one you design yourself and one of the opposite sex with randomised colours. Pair them and they produce a clutch of one to five eggs. The official encyclopedia calls breeding the central focus of the game. Genes pass down from the two parents only, weighted by rarity, so rare genes are harder to pass on and common ones turn up more often. The encyclopedia lists thirty breeds, split into Modern and Ancient groups.

Around the nest sit the other activities: gathering items for your clan's Hoard, collecting familiars and bonding with them once a day, Coliseum battles with a party of up to three dragons, a set of HTML5 mini-games at the Fairgrounds, and an elemental holiday roughly once a month, when one of the eleven flights is celebrated for a week with its own shop.

How a session goes

A typical visit, pieced together from the encyclopedia: incubate any eggs (they hatch on the sixth day, after five incubations), feed your lair from your food points, spend your gathering turns (ten a day as standard) and bond with your familiars. Then you choose: a Coliseum stage for loot and experience, a few Fairgrounds games for treasure, the everyday in-game money, or some time in the Auction House and the Crossroads trading with other players. The Scrying Workshop and the Dressing Room let you preview a dragon's look before you commit to a pairing or an outfit.

Flight Rising forgives a missed day. The eggs wait, the dragons go hungry but never die of it, and the clan is still there when you come back.

Hayloft Riders, editorial note

The time it asks for

This is the most forgiving routine in the guide. Eggs simply wait in the nest if you skip an incubation day. Dragons that run out of energy don't die; they just can't breed or battle until they're fed. Keeping the clan's average energy above 80% for three days in a row earns small daily perks, which is a nudge rather than a penalty. Breeding cooldowns of 15 to 35 days, depending on how rare a breed is, set a natural pace for the long game.

The money side

Free to play, as the button on the front page says. Gems are the virtual currency players can buy, and the encyclopedia mentions a Gem Marketplace that sells items such as the Boon of Fertility, which hatches a nest immediately. The terms of use say all sales of virtual currency and items are final, and in-game items can't be sold for real-world money, though artists may sell fan art and their own custom skins under rules the terms spell out.

The age line

The sign-up form asks you to confirm that you are old enough to consent to data processing, “13+ in most countries” in its own words. The terms add that, depending on the country, the threshold can be anywhere from 13 to 16.

Who it suits

A good fit if…

  • You love fantasy creatures and want many ways to dress them up.
  • You want a short daily habit that doesn't punish a busy week.
  • Monthly festivals and a big forum community appeal to you.
  • You like collecting looks as much as stats.

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want realism. This is dragons and elemental gods.
  • A shop selling time-savers would nag at you.
  • You're after deep tactical combat; the Coliseum is a side dish here.

Strengths and snags

Strengths

  • Forgiving rules: eggs wait and dragons don't die of neglect.
  • A detailed public encyclopedia.
  • Monthly elemental holidays keep the calendar fresh.
  • Deep cosmetic customisation, with preview tools.

Snags

  • The Gem Marketplace sells shortcuts such as instant hatching.
  • Inheritance runs on rarity weighting rather than real genetics.
  • Many interlocking systems to learn at the start.
